Dorothy Grant's Vintage Scarves Collection

Dorothy's garments have been described as a site of intersection. They are a creative space where fashion meets Haida art, myth and history. Like art, fashion should not be stagnant, but be constantly moving to convey a contemporary culture.

“DG Three Ravens Scarf”

Description

"The Raven who is able to fly above the circle, she can see the future, she looks into it from above, she plans, then she implements, she takes all necessary steps to protect and to succeed”

"Ravens" bring beauty to the world in the release of these elegantly hand-hemmed silk-screened scarves. They are crafted in Silk Charmeuse, a lightweight fabric with a satin weave giving the front of the fabric a smooth shiny finish with the back retaining a matte finish.

The "Seven Ravens" are combined in two scarves: the circular design "DG Three Ravens" scarf features three ravens while the square design "DG Four Ravens" has four. Ties added to two corners offer a new way to wear the scarf, making it an accessory to complement any garment in your wardrobe.

The circular and square "Seven Raven" designs have had a long history in Dorothy’s life. In 1989 she collaborated with Robert Davidson on two button robes which debuted in her 1989 National premier fashion show featuring a 55-piece collection held at the Hotel Vancouver. She then exhibited her fusion of fashion and traditional art in Haida Gwaii with models from the area. In 1991 the blankets were featured in the exhibition “Land, Spirit, Power”, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and later purchased for their permanent collection.

The Raven in Northwest legends symbolizes creation, transformation, knowledge and prestige, as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. He also expresses the unknown and shows that every person sees the world differently. The Raven was often called upon to clarify truths in visions, as the wise elders knew that what the eye sees is not always the truth.
